Requirements

High school students
International High school students applying to diploma programs at the Maritime College of Forest Technology must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for admission.

English language proficiency requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English require the following English language proficiency minimum scores for direct entry into most academic programs: 

  • TOEFL IBT with a minimum overall score of 90
  • IELTS or IELTS Indicator with a minimum overall score of 6.5, with no individual test score below 5.5
  • CAEL CE or CAEL Online with a minimum overall score of 60
  • Cambridge English Assessment C1 advanced or C2 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band
  • Duolingo with a minimum overall score of 115
  • Michigan English Test (formerly MELAB)– 55

Pearson Test of English – Academic 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill

Language skills to succeed

If your first language is not English, you may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency. 

You may not be required to give proof of English language proficiency if:

  • you studied at an English language institution for at least three years at the secondary level, or
  • you studied at an English language institution for at least one year at the post-secondary level.

Exemptions

An international applicant is not required to submit proof of English Language proficiency if:

  1. The applicant has studied in a high school in Canada for a minimum of 1 year and has achieved a minimum of 70% in Grade 12 English (ENG4U/EAE4U or equivalent course); or
  2. The applicant has studied in an English speaking high school for a minimum of 1 year and is applying from one of the following countries:American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda,
  3. Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Island, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nigeria,
    • Pacific Island Trust Territory, Ryukyu Island, Seychelles, Republic of Singapore, Republic of South Africa, St. Helena, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Virgin Islands, Zambia, Zimbabwe. or
  4. The applicant has studied in an English language school (secondary or higher) for a minimum of 3 years or can offer one of the following tests or qualifications:
    • GCE A Level English Literature with a minimum grade of C
    • Norway English 3rd Year Upper Secondary with a minimum grade of 4
    • Sweden English 3rd Year Upper Secondary with a minimum grade of VG
    • Denmark English 3rd Year Upper Secondary with a minimum grade of 10
    • India CBSE & CISCE year 12 English with a minimum grade of 75%

In all cases, the Maritime College of Forest Technology reserves the right to require proof of language proficiency before permission will be granted to register in academic courses.

Applicants who have completed Grade 12 of an accredited high school program must satisfy MCFT’s minimum program-specific requirements (minimum B average). Criteria such as academic standing, rank in class, and SAT scores may also be used to determine a candidate’s admissibility.

Philippines

High School Diploma (1.00–2.00). If a student has not completed a K to 12 curriculum they must also present one year of academic post-secondary studies with grades of A and B.

Poland

Swiadectwo Ukonczenia Lyceum Ogolnoksztalcacego grades of 4 or above.

Qatar

General Secondary Certificate/Al-Thanaways Al-Amma grades of 70% or higher.

Russia

Certificate of Complete General Education/Unified State Examination grades 4 or 5.

Saudi Arabia

Tawjihiyah Certificate/General Secondary Certificate with a minimum grade of 70%.

Singapore

Singapore Cambridge ‘O’ Levels: grades of A and B.

General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) plus minimum 3 qualifying Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level courses (including math for programs requiring pre-calculus), with grades of A or B.

USA

General Certificate of Secondary Education with grades of A or B. Applicants who have completed Grade 12 of an accredited high school program must satisfy MCFT’s minimum program-specific requirements (minimum B average). Criteria such as academic standing, rank in class, and SAT scores may also be used to determine a candidate’s admissibility. ACT scores are not required.

Uganda

Uganda Certificate of Education grades of 1–4.

Venezuela

Titulo de Bachiller grades of 13 and above or the equivalent.

Vietnam

Upper Secondary School Graduation Certificate with grades of 6 or above.

All entrance requirements for MCFT are based on University/College preparation courses. Provincial course names, levels, and codes may differ from those that are deemed requirements by MCFT, in such a case appropriate actions regarding entrance requirements will be taken to correct any discrepancies.

All applicants are required to have the minimum course selection outlined in the Admission Requirements, all courses rated higher than the minimum requirements are beneficial and recommended. It is essential that other preparatory courses like creative writing, chemistry, and advanced math are taken into consideration when preparing for post-secondary education.
